The list of authorized online sports betting venues continues to grow with each passing day. Today, it is at least fourteen states and Washington, DC, but in some states it is still up to fourteen. In the face of this growth, both Las Vegas and Internet Sports Betting sites have increased security and in many cases removed gambling from the home environment altogether. However, as stated before, this does not mean that there are no longer any online sports betting venues in the United States.
For example, did you know that there are actually online gambling sites in the State of New Mexico? Do you know that the State of Nevada has created a legal department which seeks to crack down on the activities of Online sports betting? This is not to say that the problem of illegal gambling is going to disappear overnight or that the problem of online gambling is limited to a few jurisdictions. The truth is, the problem of online gambling and sports betting is very much a national issue and can be addressed in many different ways.
One of the most important things to recognize when discussing online gambling is the fact that it is a business. This means that a smart business person does not look at an issue of online sports betting as a purely moral or ethical issue, but rather one of practicality. A wise businessman sees the long term potential of a particular business opportunity and acts accordingly. Therefore, if the business does well then it is in a great position to create a lot of jobs for a number of people. If the business does poorly then the job losses may make the job loss suffer. Thus, a wise businessman looks at online gambling and sports betting as a business and one that should be profitable for everyone involved.
While we are on the topic of businesses, let me throw another bone to the online sports betting community that is just as important. That bone is location. It is widely acknowledged that there are a number of legal issues that surround online gambling. In addition to the legality of the transactions itself, some jurisdictions have enacted legislation that is hostile to online sports betting. (This legislation generally makes it illegal for an individual to operate an online sports betting business from his or her home). Therefore, when you are looking to conduct your business, conduct it where the law doesn't pertain.
In light of the above, let me bring up an interesting legal issue that almost never comes up in online sports betting but is a topic that I hear quite often in my practice: advance-deposit wagering. The issue of advance-deposit wagering in a sportsbook comes up quite often, because the practice of using a customer's credit card to wager on the odds involves the transfer of funds from the payer's account to the sportsbook's account. Since the laws regarding this are often difficult to enforce, especially with regard to the issue of whether a person is actually obtaining "monetary advantage" through the use of their credit card, most reputable online sports books and sports books will not permit advance-deposit wagering. On the other hand, since it is so commonly used by players, many wagering services do allow it.
That brings me to the subject of lotteries and how they work in sports betting. Lotteries work pretty much the same way as in traditional sports betting. They are a system of paying a set amount of money upfront for the chance of winning a particular game. Lotteries use a variety of different types of tickets, and depending on the game involved, may offer one, a variety of tickets, or a combination of both. The key difference between lotteries and traditional betting systems is that lotteries are open to everyone who signs up, whereas a sportsbook limits the number of bets that can be made at any one time.
